Wellness: Start your Summer Garden Now!

Any green thumb enthusiasts out there? Is there anything more soothing and calming than gardening? Did you know that gardening can lower your stress and blood pressure, boost your self-esteem and help calm depression and anxiety? Yep, gardening isn't just for the birds anymore, so we wanted to give you a few tips to get yours started in time for the last frost.

Seed starting is a very rewarding hobby that not only provides you with the accomplishment of growing something from the start, but also yields delicious results that you can enjoy all summer long. Starting your seeds is all about timing and should be based on your location. Check out your local Farmer's Almanac to judge when your last frost may be so you know when you can transplant your seedlings to their permanent home outside. Here are some other tips to get you going!

1. Go for the gold! Choose organic, open pollinated, heirloom seeds. You've heard the phrase, "Go big or go home"? Keep that in mind with you choose your seeds. If you are going to grow some veggie goodness, you may as well grow the best!

2. Don't use regular potting soil. Go to your nearest nursery and find a seed starting blend. These provide your seedlings with proper air flow and proper water retention. Look for a mix that is light weight, but dense enough to tamper your seed into the soil for direct contact.

3. Light the way. Keep them warm and keep them hydrated! A great way to keep your seeds temperature consistent and provide them with enough light (assuming you have a good kitchen window) is to keep your seedlings on top of your refrigerator. The warmth for your fridge's energy will give a good dose of germinating warmth needed to sprout while the light from your kitchen will give your seeds the energy they need to grow. Keep their soil damp and never let it dry out completely. We suggest placing your seedling container in a small pool of water so the starting mix can wick up moisture from the bottom.

4. Pick the right container. Choose a seed-starting container (which can be found at your local hardware store or nursery) or use flower flats from last years planting. Each seed starting container should be 2-3 inches deep and have proper drainage bottoms.

5. Show your seeds some love! Once your seeds have germinated and begun to sprout, talk to them. Gently pet their little leaves and keep them stimulated. Yes, you read that right. Not only have studies shown that plants in general respond to touch and sound, but you benefit from talking to your little sprout you worked so hard to grow!

6. Transplant with care and FEED your plants' soul. Once your seedling is ready to be transplanted outside, be sure that you move them into a good organic, vegetable soil. Give them a chance to acclimate to the big bad world by giving them a few hours outside in the shade a few days before transplanting. Give them enough space to grow and don't let them get too crowded by other veggies or flowers. It is suggested to keep your plants 3-5 inches apart from each other for the perfect yield and growth. Once they are transplanted, feed them with organic nutrients and fertilizers (perfect time to use your compost.)

7. Grow baby grow: Keep your plants well hydrated, well-fed and happy. If there is a storm coming in, give them shelter with a light tarp until the storm moves away. Give them daily loving, watering, pruning and talking. Once they start producing food, thank them and yourself for the goods!

Wellness: National Yoga Month

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that yoga is one of the most popular AND beneficial workouts out there. Not only does it give your muscles, joints, and tendons and bones some love, it calms the brain and nerves while deepening your inner connection with yourself. Yoga has long been used to treat multiple physical and mental disruptions as well as to prep the body for stillness, utilized during mantra and meditation. Simple poses, held in increments provides your brain with focus, your body with strength, and your life with balance. In honor of National Yoga Month, we have put together the perfect set of poses to wake you up in the morning so you can start each day with a clear mind and full spirit.

Osmosis' National Yoga Month Stretch for Health Routine:

Upon waking, sit upright on your legs. Take 5 deep breaths and set your intentions for the day in your mind.

From your seat, move forward into child's pose. This will wake up your organs, ease lower back pain and help align your spine. Stay in this pose for 2 minutes and breathe deeply.

From Child's Pose, slowly push your body up onto all fours and breathe into Cat/Cow Pose. Cat/Cow warms up your muscles, joints, and spine all while deeply stretching out the back.  Repeat the movement up to 10 times.

From Cat/Cow move into Downward Dog. Downward Dog stretches your legs, arms, neck, and back (full body, if you will). Breathe through the pose 5 times.

From Downward Dog, move into Warrior II pose. Breathe through this 8 times, then switch to the other side.

Move into standing position and get ready for Triangle Pose. Breathe through the pose 5 times, then repeat on the other side.

Take 20 seconds per leg and hold Tree Pose. Close your eyes and focus on the intentions you set for the day.

From Tree Pose, go to knee position, moving into Camel Pose. Don't fret if this pose is too deep for you, simply modify it by sticking out your chest and abs until you feel a comfortable, deep stretch. Breathe through this pose 10 times, really focus on making room for your lungs and other organs to function, imaging the air going through your body and your body being grateful and fulfilled.

Take time this September to give yoga a chance. These simple poses are beneficial and quick. Yoga is the perfect workout to fit into a busy lifestyle. You can do these poses for as long or as little as you like, just make sure you DO them!

Once you have completed these moves, give your body and brain an extra boost of goodness with Inner Harmony Harmonized Water, then hit the ground running! We promise you will feel like a superhuman if you complete this routine every morning, look out batman er... superwoman, we're coming for you!

At Home: Wellness with Herbs

Summer is a time for being active and surrounding yourself with growth. The best way to do that is to plant a simple garden and take in its beauty every day! Gardening can be a soothing and rewarding activity. But did you know that you can grow your own wellness right in your own backyard? Many seem to forget about starting an herb garden and go right for the flowers instead. Herbs play a key role in your health and most are very easy to grow and maintain. Here are our top 8 herbs to grow in your garden for the best health benefits for internal and external use!

Basil has long been used medicinally to treat inflammation and bacteria and it provides high doses of vitamins K, A, and C. This tasty powerhouse can be brewed into a facial toner, or tea and of course tastes great in any number of summertime dishes. To brew your own Basil toner, steep 12-15 stems and leaves in boiling water for 3 minutes. Pour "tea" into a heat safe bowl and allow to cool. Mix 3 tablespoons of basil water with 2 table spoons of which hazel and rub onto skin with a cotton ball. This mixture works great on acne prone skin.

Cilantro - This earthy herb aids in harmonizing digestion and relieving gastric upset. Its high concentrate of Vitamin C makes this herb a great antioxidant to put into any meal. Cilantro also promotes a healthy liver which can help promote balanced insulin production. Mix cilantro in rice dishes or top white fish with this fragrant herb.

Mint is the perfect addition to any garden. Not only does its scent deter spiders and other critters from getting into your garden, it provides a whole lot of internal well-being. Steep mint in hot water for two minutes, drink and find relief from menstrual cramping, stomach upset, headaches, and stress. Mint also makes for a great addition to your daily water intake. In a large pitcher, add water, mint, and lemon to create a great detoxifying water to enjoy every day. You can also add five pumps of your favorite Harmonized Water to this recipe for boosted results!

Thyme is an all star when it comes to killing bacteria in the body. Thyme is a great alternative to treat colds, coughs, and sore throats. Steep it as a tea or press the oils from its leaves to treat acne and eczema. You can also add it's oil to an Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse to combat oily scalp and dandruff.  High in Vitamin A, this herb is great to treat your skin from the inside out.

Sage - This tasty herb helps balance symptoms caused by brain and nervous disorders. Feel relief from stress, anxiety, and depression by sipping on some sage tea. Sage also helps kill bacteria in the mouth and throat. Rub a sage leave on mouth sores to lessen the inflammation and pain. Sage makes for a great seasoning on many meat dishes. It also tastes great when browned in Ghee! Top your summer pasta with that mixture and get ready to rejoice in tasty goodness.
Lavender - Lavender is one of the most versatile herbs out there. Use it in baking or cooking for a unique layer of flavor! The best way to use lavender is to find relaxation and induce sleep. Trim a large amount of lavender from your garden and dry it out. Once its dry, place it in a small sachet  to place under your pillow to gain its benefits as you drift off to sleep.

Rosemary - This pungent herb helps deter pesky garden critters from entering your sanctuary, this includes mosquitoes! The heavenly scent can help clear the mind and help you feel grounded just by taking a whiff. It's oils can help treat hair loss, dandruff and irritated skin. You can also infuse your water with it for a tasty, anti-inflammation treatment.

Lemon Balm - Stay alert and clear your mind with lemon balm. This herb can be used to treat a wide variety of issues and daily disruptions. Lemon balm, when ingested, helps treat gas, cramping, and stomach upset. It also helps with muscle tension and inflammation. Used as a poultice, it can help induce faster healing and reduce swelling and inflammation caused from wounds. Add fresh lemon balm to salads or light fish meals to give a little citrus spice!

Get out and plant these herbs and get ready for some serious holistic healing. These herbs are easy to maintain with daily watering and proper trimming. How does your garden grow?

Wellness Wednesday: Mosquito Help!

Wellness in the summer time is pretty easy to do. You have a bounty of amazing fruits and veggies in season, you work out more to keep your bikini body in shape, and you probably get plenty of Vitamin D. There are of course, some unwanted results of summer. The main one we always think of is mosquito bites. Is there anything worse? With viruses being spread by these pesky buggers, it is vital to protect yourself from them. Are you that one person who attracts bug bites like Brad Pitt attracts everyone on the planet? Then we have what you need. Bugs, especially mosquitoes, are attracted to three core things: Heat - Mosquitoes can sense heat from a living being, which to the bug means FOOD. Perspiration - Sweat can put off scents of lactic acid and body odor which is a huge attractant to these little fools.  Standing Water - Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Be sure to empty any buckets, barrels, or any other outdoor still-water source.

How can we help? Being that our own bodies attract the bite, we can alter the frequency of attraction. Mosquito Harmonized Water helps by creating a vibration on our skin which detracts them from landing and feeding. Of course, as with all mosquito prevention, there is always that one mosquito who lives on the edge, and may go for it anyway. Keep your eyes peeled for the adventurous one.

Take 5 pumps of water within the hour of venturing outside for your evening BBQ or party! Keep the water with you and re-dose every three hours while you are outside. This is the most natural and effective way to protect yourself without dowsing your body in harmful chemicals.

Keep perfumes and cologne at a minimum and wear a natural antiperspirant to fend them off. If you do get bit, keep some Environmental Protection Harmonized Water and Rescue on hand to treat the bite and harmonize your antihistamine reaction.

You don't have to stay inside all summer to avoid being a mosquito victim. Just utilize our Mosquito Harmonized Water and get out and enjoy your summer with wellness, health, and love!

Inflammation: The Best Foods to Fight it!

Inflammation can be a fickle beast. If your organs are inflamed then chances are your skin is as well. If your skin is inflamed, you may not be feeling too happy. Did you know what we eat and put into our bodies has a HUGE effect on our overall wellness?  Foods with high fat, sugar, and salt can heighten inflammation as can heavy diets consisting of red meat and deli meats (which are heavily processed and extremely high in sodium). In order to bring our inflammation down we need to put alkalizing food into our system. When our bodies are low in acidity and high on alkaline, inflammation is diminished. There are some really great and tasty foods to incorporate into your daily diet to help keep your wellness in check. Let's take a deeper look into the Osmosis plan for anti-inflammation eating.

1. Whole Grain: Whole grains are high in fiber and low in sugar. They also help keep your bowel movements regular which is key to keeping your intestines healthy!

2. Dark Leafy Greens: It's no secret that dark leafy greens play a vital role in your wellness and health. Vitamin E rich greens play a key role in protecting the body from inflammation-causing proteins. The chlorophyl in leafy greens also contributes to beneficial detoxing and skin health.

3. Nuts: Nuts that are rich in omega-3, antioxidants, and healthy fats are vital to reducing inflammation. Adding nuts like Almonds, Walnuts, and Pecans can reduce inflammation in as little as six weeks time.

4. Bright colored veggies and spices: Ginger, Turmeric, Onion, and Garlic are perfect foods to add into any meal to help fight inflammation and toxins. Peppers, tomatoes, and beets also contribute to wellness with their antioxidant powers and protect the body from harmful chemicals. Juicing these healthful veggies in the morning with lemon and berries is a great way to start your day!

5. Olive Oil: This oil is high in good fats and aids in keeping the body lubricated, which aids in toxin and inflammation excretion. Olive Oil is a great substitute for butter and other saturated fats used to flavor and cook food.

6. Citrus: Orange, lemon, and lime are high in heart-healthy and immune-healthy Vitamin C. These fruits are highly alkalizing which contributes to low inflammation.

**Additional supplements to help fight inflammation include Complete and Inner Harmony. These two help with proper digestion and balance of the organs' main functions. Don't forget to take Complete after every meal to aid in enzymatic functions and Inner Harmony morning and night to balance your body's internal wellness.**

These six all-stars are foods that can easily fit into your daily diet and taste delicious. One of our favorite recipes to utilize these fabulous foods is Forbidden Kale Salad. See the recipe below and get to eating!

Forbidden Kale Salad:

Serves 2

1 1/2 Cups Cooked Black Rice (aka Forbidden Rice)
4 Cups Kale (torn into bite-sized pieces)
1 Large Beet (cooked and chopped)
1/2 Chopped Onion (red or white)

Dressing:

2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Tablespoons Crushed Almonds
1 Clove Garlic (diced)
1 Tablespoon Fresh, Organic Almond Butter
1 Juicy Lime
Pinch of Salt and Pepper
Fresh grated Ginger and Turmeric for garnish and flavor.

Combine all oil, almond butter, garlic, lime juice, salt and pepper and whisk together until all ingredients are emulsified.

In a large bowl combine rice, beets, onion, and kale.

Drizzle dressing onto the salad and toss until everything is well-coated.

Sprinkle almonds, ginger, and turmeric on top. Serve it up and eat it! This salad makes for a great lunch or dinner. You could even add a scrambled egg to it and down it for breakfast!

Our skincare is dependent on how we treat our bodies internally. When our bodies are balanced and low on inflammation our skin will glow with health. For an in-depth eating plan to help squash inflammation and detox like a pro, go here.

Wellness Wednesday: Pre-Workout Fuel!

It is officially that time of year... Pre-swimsuit season! The gym memberships are primed, you've completed your Spring Detox and you are ready to take the next step to a healthy, strong, swimsuit-ready body! What ever workout you are about to embark on (or already do consistently) it is extremely important to make sure you give your body the proper fuel before you start. Pre-workout fuel is all about the carbs and sugar (natural sugar that is). We love prepping our workout with Energize Me Harmonized Water. It's the perfect start to hydrating and prepping your body for some work. Once we have taken our Energize Me we like to start with something simple like whole wheat toast with sliced bananas and cinnamon. The carbs from the toast will provide consistent energy throughout your workout, while the banana will keep your potassium levels balanced (we lose potassium when we sweat) and cinnamon, of course helps rev up your metabolism.  Another great and tasty recipe we love is an overnight oats smoothie.

The night before your workout combine:

1/2 cup gluten free oats
3/4 cup milk, water, or dairy-free milk (like almond or coconut)
1/2 Banana
8-10 whole pecans
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Place all ingredients in a blender or sealed container and pop in the fridge overnight.

Once you are ready to fuel up (1 -1/2 hours before your workout) blend the ingredients, eat from a bowl, or drink from a cup. This little pre-workout gem gives you plenty of fuel by gradually releasing sugar to your body for an extra kick of energy while the water content from the bananas will help keep your body hydrated.

After your pre-workout meal, take an Elevate. This will kick your metabolism to ready mode, provide sustained energy throughout your workout, AND help improve muscle tone and function. Elevate also keeps your brain sharp, helping you stay focused during your workout.

Between Energize Me, Elevate, and a healthy pre-workout meal, you have a trifecta of awesome just waiting to help you obtain a healthy, strong body. Now put on your 'tennies' and hit the pavement!

Heart Harmony

How often do you think about your heart? It is, after all, the source that keeps you going. February is Heart Health Month and we want to make sure that you give your heart the love it deserves and needs to keep on pumping. A major part of your wellness is eating right and exercising. Getting at least 30 minutes of cardio a day is very important to keep your heart healthy. What else can you do to ensure your ticker keeps on ticking? Inner Harmony and Elevate, that's what! Supplementing your heart with balance is the trifecta to your healthy diet and movement. Both of these supplements aid in your heart's health and harmony. Let's find out why.

Inner Harmony Harmonized Water - Inner Harmony not only aids in balancing skin and overall state of mind, it also aids in organ protection. By helping your organs detox daily, you provide each organ (like your heart) with the power of protection. Removing toxins from the body daily helps keep your body alkaline, which in turn helps ease inflammation. Inner Harmony is an important part of keeping your body in line so your heart can keep you going. Take it twice daily for optimum results.

Elevate - Take your heart health to the next level. Elevate aids in providing sustained, caffeine-free energy to keep your body moving. CoQ10 keeps your heart safe from free radicals and gives your heart a healthy dose of antioxidants, while Ganoderma (often referred to as the elixir of life), keeps inflammation at bay and aids in detoxifying the body. Elevate also raises your metabolisim and helps with weight loss. A big part of heart health is having a healthy weight. Losing fat will keep your heart (and other organs for that matter) functioning longer and stronger for a prolonged, healthy life.

Take care of your heart every day with these two harmony-inducing supplements. Elevate and Inner Harmony are easy to add into your daily lifestyle to keep your heart pumping. Show your heart a lot of love and give it a squeeze with these two heart-loving buddies.

Dr. Johnson's Corner - November 2015

Happy November and Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I want to take this time to remind you to find joy in what you do and to let it be contagious. Remember that through Osmosis we are not just wanting to make people look more beautiful, but also to feel better and to ultimately make their lives better in many ways. Approach each day with a full, grateful heart and lofty goals and watch how many lives you can change in the process. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work with you and for your help in spreading joy across the country and across the world.

Systemic Balance: The Key to Wellness

One of the strengths that we at Osmosis have as a progressive skin care company, is our core philosophy of treating the body and skin as one cohesive unit. Respecting the link between what happens inside our body, and what is reflected on our skin. This evolution of understanding is what sets us apart from the entire industry as a whole. Our bodies maintain an intricate system designed to prevent imbalances that cause us harm and disease. The rub? This system can easily malfunction if we constantly abuse it; the unfortunate thing is we are doing just that on a daily basis, without fully realizing it. Most of the modern diseases that plague our society are not random occurrences, but are the emanation of what we do to our bodies every day. Science is indeed an evidence-based system, but also one based on common sense. Contrary to common assumptions, there is an abundant amount of evidence that the common sense approach of eating right, exercising, reducing toxic overload and maintaining a positive outlook has a direct implication in making us well. This is not a transformative breakthrough in science or medicine, but a return to the fundamental principles that modern medicine was founded on. The truth is that healthy behavioral patterns create an environment where we can shift the genetic code and expression in our favor. Research from the CDC has even proved that those who follow these common sense approaches to wellness, have the ability to curb disease expression, aging and premature death by as much as 50%! I get incredibly excited when I visit accounts across the country, that take the whole body approach to treating their clients. Giving them the tools they need to live a healthier lifestyle. While there is no magic pill or supplement that exists, the right combination of supplements that support the body’s inherent ability to heal, are the perfect adjunct to this type of wellness therapy.

Our collection of Harmonized Waters, Elevate and Restore, utilize technologies that tap into and support the natural function and design of body homeostasis. From energy regulation, to reduction in oxidative stress and powerful immune support, amassing the proper tools and mastering the ability to use them will give you and your clients the ultimate gift of health, longevity and wellness. This is not a select privilege for a few, but an undeniable right for all.  We not only have the power to make an impact on the skin, but lives as well. Care to join on the journey with us? J

Dr Johnson's Corner :: Employee and Client Wellness

Ben Johnson, MD
Wellness is inseparable from skin health.  Occasionally I hear about skin reactions by employees or clients to products that had otherwise been well tolerated.  Most of the time, these temporary flare-ups are directly related to imbalances within the system, not allergies to ingredients as is often assumed.  Toxin overload, dehydration, and high stress can all reduce the skin’s ability to respond to immune enhancers.  This can also create intolerances in the skin in which you would want less stimulation topically and internally as to not overwhelm your skin’s immune system.  Osmosis’ commitment to internal health will allow you to stay healthy this summer, whether you are at the beach, hiking the mountains, or camping in the woods.

Osmosis encourages its employees and clients to use Elevate ATP to help sustain natural energy, Environmental Protection and Breathe to help eliminate toxins and clear allergies, and even Hangover Harmonized H20 for the occasional indulgence.  All of these internal immune boosters will help build strength in the skin and body creating health from the inside out so that you stay well and beautiful throughout the summer months and beyond.

Employee Wellness ~ Staying Healthy

According to the Centers for Disease Control, preventable lifestyle-related chronic diseases drive 75 percent of health care spending, with only five percent of those costs used for prevention.

Creating and encouraging a healthy environment allows employees to strive for empowered transformations, resulting in a community of strengths that work in harmony as a team.  For many companies encouraging a healthy life style is just the beginning of having long-term, committed and happy employees.

Take steps to protect your health by looking at your work environment.  Some people spend up to 12 hours by their treatment table or at their desk and good ergonomics can mean the difference between a healthy work posture and stresses on the body that can lead to injury.  Prevention is the best medicine ~ just like with our skin!
