The Importance of Sleep in Your Beauty Routine

We know we're supposed to get our beauty sleep every night. But we all live such busy lives and when we have to juggle sleep, a social life, a full-time job, and trying to balance a healthy, active lifestyle somewhere in there, more times than not it's our Zs that get the boot. In fact, the CDC proved that over a third of American's don't get adequate sleep for their health. How important is sleep, though? And how much is "enough"? We're diving into all things sleep-related and how it affects our health both physically and mentally.

Sleep is Vital.

Just as we need oxygen, food, and water, sleep is equally as crucial to our health and survival. The difference is, we would never claim to be "too busy" to breathe or drink water when we're thirsty. So, why is it that we take pride in being too busy to sleep as a status symbol when it is just as detrimental to our bodies as skipping meals or holding our breath? Society has created a very serious problem by demanding so much work, play, and general time-spent doing from us as humans, creating a stigma that "sleep is for the weak". More like sleep creates the weak. We are experiencing an awakening in this health and wellness movement and slowing realizing the impact of this mindset on our bodies and brains. It is our job to turn this around and encourage restfulness, not a busy schedule.

What happens when we don't get enough sleep?

From your immune system function to your appetite, to your heart, hormone, and mental health, the amount of rest your body gets has a direct impact. While you are sleeping, your body is able to perform a self-evaluation and ensure all systems get the restoration needed. During this time, it resets and restores muscles and cells, heals and repairs areas of the body that are in need, and "cleans house" by clearing away toxins (both physically and mentally) that may otherwise cause problems in the body's optimal function. Skipping out on this nightly reboot could be detrimental to your well-being and start to interfere with your body's ability to fight off illnesses, increase risk of more serious diseases, induce chronic brain fog, and promote weight gain and compromised skin. This is just to name a few!

How to prioritize rest.

- Turn off your smartphone (or put it away) one hour before you go to bed giving your brain time to relax and shut down for the day. Try a caffeine-free herbal tea and reading a book in bed to slow your brain waves and energy level.

- Create a sleep sanctuary out of your bedroom. This means putting a little extra effort into this room in your house. Try adding elements like plush, cozy bedding, essential oils, and plants!

- Eat dinner earlier. Eating a big, heavy dinner right before bed puts enormous strain on your digestive system, putting it to work when your whole body is trying to rest. This takes away from restful sleep and restoration because your energy is now focusing on digestion instead of healing and repair.

- Try incorporating pre-bedtime yoga stretches into your nighttime routine to help wind-down the mind and body. This will help promote a deep, restful sleep all night long to get the most out of your shut-eye!

Stress: How to Beat it!

Stress. It's an intricate web of madness and often times is a silent monster that we don't know we have until it's too late. We all know that stress can affect our bodies in many different ways leaving us emotionally depleted, physically exhausted, and sometimes down-right blue. Stress is not only a mental monster, but it can also wreak havoc on your organs, cells, and skin. From breakouts, to puffy eyes and bellies, stress (often caused by internal and emotional inflammation) can leave us feeling detached, anxious, and feisty. In honor of National Stress Awareness Month, we have put together some tips to beat stress once and for all!

1. Breathe! This is the most important tip of all. Often when stress and anxiety kick in, our bodies go into fight or flight mode. With that, our breathing becomes staccato, causing our brains to lose out on vital amounts of oxygen. When you feel stress creeping up, remove yourself from your current environment and go someplace quiet and safe (like your staff bathroom or your car). Set your phone alarm for 5 minutes and get to breathing. Take steady, smooth breaths inhaling for a count of 7 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, then exhale nice and slow for 7 seconds. Do this for 5 minutes, focus only on your breath and start to feel the benefits of oxygen. *You may feel a little light headed at first, push through it and keep breathing.*

2. Harmonize! We feel so happy that we are able to provide you with a holistic way to combat stress and feel better. We love using Relax Harmonized Water and Inner Harmony Harmonized Water. Use these two together for a mid-day reset. Relax will help with the overall symptoms of stress while Inner Harmony will go deeper, helping to give your organs and cells a much needed boost.

3. Aromatherapy! Use essential oils to help calm your nerves and brain. We love these three oils for stress reduction: Lavender, Grapefruit, and Rose. Give yourself a whiff of each (separately) for a soothing scent break.

4. Dance! There is nothing better than an impromptu dance party. When you get home from work, crank some tunes (we suggest a fabulous 80's play list) and get down! After a long day, sometimes your body and muscles need to feel some love. Dancing is a great way to increase muscle memory and it gives your brain a break from thinking. So, don't worry about looking silly, just go for it. AND if you have a partner (or pet) at home, bring them in on the fun!

5. Visualize! Stress on your eyes happens every single day. From looking at a screen, to proofreading reports, your peepers put in a full day, everyday! Give them a break from relaying work related information to the brain by looking at images that make you feel happy. We love putting together a Pinterest board of images that just make us feel good. This can be anything from floral images, art, scenery or an Osmosis favorite... pictures of cats or dogs... or cats AND dogs together! Allowing yourself to take in some non-work related joy in the middle of the day lifts your spirits and gives your eyes and brain a little mid-day reset!

There you have it! 5 great tips to help you de-stress. Utilize these tips daily to start feeling lighter, happier, and healthier.

Essential Oils: Fall Must-Haves for a Happy Home

"Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower" - Albert Camus

Fall is the time to reinvigorate and rejuvenate (with a cup of pumpkin spice something of course). Part of gearing up for fall is taking a moment to reinvent your home. You can do this on a low budget just by adding cleansing scents that warm and awaken the spirit. We are huge fans of essential oils, they can add a sense of newness to your home and calm negative energy. Here are our favorite essential oils for fall:

1. Frankincense: This ancient oil has long been used to treat a multitude of spiritual and physical symptoms. Frankincense is great to keep in your diffuser at all times. Breathing in it's earthy scent helps relieve headaches, negative thoughts, and helps keep the air clean with it's antiseptic properties.

2. Clove: Clove is the perfect oil to diffuse to boost your energy. In the morning take a whiff or two right upon waking. Let the warming yet energizing scent lift you up before you start your day. Keep in mind, clove has super strength so be sure to use WAY less than you think you need in your diffuser.

3. Sandalwood and Birch Blend: These two oils can help soothe autumn coughs due to germs and colds floating around. This blend will also help clean the air around you and soothe your mind and boost your memory function.

4. Cardamom: This spice gives a warm, balsamic, slightly sweet scent. Your home will smell like a fall forest when you diffuse this stomach soothing oil.

5. Vanilla: Soothe nerves, squash anxiety, and drift off to sleep with a feeling of tranquility. Vanilla is so much more than a delicious flavor, its scent can simply calm you and your space. Its antioxidant powers can also help clean the air of free radicals.

You can give your home a spiritual facelift in a few easy steps.

1. Get yourself an oil diffuser!
2. Pick your oils!
3. Create a blend and pop it into your diffuser.
4. Breath deeply and enjoy the scent of autumn right in your home.

This fall is the perfect time to create your own warm, essential oil blends to help you cleanse your home and spirit of stress and negativity before the holiday season starts.

Make your own blend and get to diffusing. Add the benefit of a Harmonized Water to get a full, inside and outside effect.

Wellness: Gain Energy the Natural Way

Have you ever tried having a conversation with someone BEFORE your morning cup of coffee? It never turns out too well does it? Energy seems to be a luxury now-a-days. It's tough to feel awake and ready to take on the day after a long day of work and binge watching Netflix at night. While we are all about that morning cup of coffee, continuing to indulge throughout the day can really throw a wrench in your circadian rhythm causing you to have sleep disruptions and feel groggy upon waking instead of feeling well rested and ready to go. Osmosis knows it's not easy to say no to the mid afternoon caffeine trip, but we do have 5 easy solutions for you to gain energy in a more natural way.

* Sleep! Getting the right amount of sleep is not only vital to having sustained energy throughout the day, it's vital to your overall health and wellness. Relax Harmonized Water helps promote sounder sleep and helps reduce stress. It's so hard to turn off our minds at night. Try taking five pumps of Relax 30 minutes before you want to hit the hay, then meditate for 20 minutes. Focus on breathing. In through your nose and out through your mouth. Tell each body part to rest, starting with your feet. Once you get to your head, focus on clearing your mind and give yourself permission to put your daily stressors away for the night.

* Wake up and WORK OUT! Working out in the morning has been proven to kick-start energy and sustain it throughout the day. Try yoga, cardio, or a fun barre class to get your heart, body, and spirit moving. Check out our tips for your pre-workout fuel here.

* Energize Me Harmonized Water. Once you hit that mid morning slump (around 11 AM), take 5 pumps of Energize Me. This frequency targets the body's natural energy sources, giving you a non-jittery bolt of "Let's do this!" Energize Me can be taken throughout the day (and before your workout) to better provide you with non-caffeinated energy.

*Rejuvenate Mind and Body Harmonized Water: The perfect addition to your lunch time routine! Rejuvenate helps tired muscles and organs (like your brain). These frequencies target mental sharpness, focus and serotonin (the hormone that helps us feel happy)! This is the perfect pick-me-up before you attack the second half of your day.

*Stretch. Halfway through your day, take a 10 minute break to go someplace relaxing and quiet to realign the body and mind. Stretch from head to toe and give your muscles a quick shake-out to wake them up from being at a desk. Practice deep breathing while you stretch to ensure your brain is getting a good dose of oxygen.

You CAN get through the day without that second cup of coffee or soda. Practice these five steps and start seeing boundless energy results within two weeks!

Internal Wellness: How to Beat Summer Bloat!

There aren't too many bad things to say about summer... except that extreme heat can make you balloon up around your ankles, tummy, knees, and hands. Many of us take a beat from our Camel friends and retain water under extreme heat conditions. We've got some great tips on how to beat the bloat and still enjoy the heat!

* Hydrate first thing in the morning! Drink a room temperature glass of water with 1/2 - 1 full lemon squeezed in. The lemon will help alkalize the body and start it off right.

*Take five pumps of Digestive Health Harmonized Water. This water balances the frequencies that cause bloating, thus aiding in taking it down.

*Squeeze in a quick work out. Yoga poses like Child's Pose can help wake up the body and balance it's organs and is great for pushing air, toxins, and gunk out of your intestines.

*Stay hydrated ALL day!

*Once you get home and start to decompress from your day, if you're hanging out on your couch, elevate your legs at a 90 degree angle from your torso. This will kick up your circulation. Move your ankles and toes around while you are elevated.

*Take a cool shower. Cool your body down before you go to bed. Summer heat can stick with you long after you are out of it. Cool showers will calm you nerves and tell your organs that you are ready for sleep.

*Take five pumps of Digestive Health and Relax Harmonized Water.

*If bloating still continues, try sipping on a lightly steeped cup of Dandelion Root Tea. This root helps tremendously with water retention, just don't go over board as it can cause dehydration you if you overuse it!

There you have it! Quick tips to beat summer bloating! Get out there and enjoy the summer with out the puffy ankles!
