How to Snag Summer's Hottest Makeup Trends!




Bring on the COLOR! This summer is bringing about major color trends that we are going gaga for. Most summers are filled with shimmery sheers, glossy nudes and "no-makeup" makeup. This summer, we've got some new trends in town that we are loving. Color is making a comeback, and we're not talking about your average teal or cobalt blue. Pink, is the color to wear this season and we have just the items to help you rock this girly shade, with some edge of course.

Don't let labels stop you from reaching summer trend potential. For example, Blush isn't just for your cheeks! Tulip Blush is the perfect shade to achieve this winged, pink look. Use your concealer brush to apply (patting motions) and use the precision tip of the brush to pull the color out into a wing. Finish the look with a swipe of Black Eye Pencil and loads of Volumizing Mascara.





Amp up this look by smoking out the Tulip Blush on top and bottom lash line, then pat on a small amount of Refresh PM for a glossy, grungy finish.





Pink Lips are also to die for this season, they boast confidence, passion and fun. We love Passion Lip Stick for it's bright appearance and semi-matte finish. If you want to pump up the chroma of this pink, tap Tulip Blush and Amethyst Water Color Eyeshadow into the center of the lower lip for a multi-dimensional pucker.

Pair a bright pink lip with a subtle smokey eye and a halo of golden/peach blush like, Spring Crush.



The last of our go-to trends is the Underline. Add drama to your eyes while making them look larger and brighter by lining only the lower lashline with Blue or Plum Eye Pencil. Smoke it out and load up on mascara for a fun, unique twist on liner.

Makeup: A look at the History of Beauty




Do you ever wonder just how old makeup is? No, not your expiration date, the actual use of and art of makeup? It's literally ancient! In honor of National Women's History Month, we thought it would be fun to teach a little "her-story" lesson in makeup through the ages and honor those who brought this revolutionary tool of women (and men's) confidence to the forefront of our time.

In the ancient Egyption ages, both men and women would protect their skin from the scorching sun by using oils, homemade ointments and the now-known Kohl which was made up from burnt almonds, oxidized copper, different colored coppers ores, lead, ash, and ochre. This is the first known use of 'cosmetics.' Kohl later became not only a representation of looks (it was quite desirable to have almond-shaped eyes) and a protection ritual from evil. From that point forward, oils, plant pigments and fruit pigments became a popular use to signify class, status, and ritual uses around the globe.


Moving forward in time to the Elizabethan Era when lead, arsenic, and egg whites were utilized to maintain a pale complexion, which let others know your status (the paler you were, the less time you spent outside, hence the opulence of being wealthy enough to own a roof!) and the egg whites were applied on top of the skin to give a glossy, tight look. Beets and other red fruits were used to stain the lips and cheeks and lead or ochre to line the eyes. With time, it became apparent that their use of these cosmetics were indeed leading to poison and even death... Death by liner anyone?!? The use of makeup grew rapidly between men and women of stature.


The Victorian age experienced a decline in the use of makeup as it was not deemed a suitable form to present yourself, unless...of course you were a woman of the night. The most that a woman or man would do is apply one drop of lemon juice in their eyes with the belief that they would appear bright and awake (ouch)! This is the era that cheek-pinching became popular as well. In private (of course) women would pinch their cheeks in order to bring blood to the surface for a natural, reddish glow.

It wasn't until the early 1900's that makeup started to resurface as acceptable and boy-oh-boy this is the time that history-makers emerged. Helena Rubenstien, Elizabeth Arden and Max Factor came to the scene around 1914, bringing fresh products (without poison) to the scene. Let's also not forget that 1914 also saw its first mascara ad, the mascara aptly named Mable, after the sister of its inventor which later became known as Maybelline. Helena Rubenstien was really the first female cosmetic entrepreneur showing the importance of skincare and makeup to men and women in Europe and the US. This is where commercial beauty as we know it today was born!

Moving forward through time, the 1920's is a pivotal moment in makeup history as it now was widely available to women of all statures and it was more commonly used to express one's self. Painted nails, smokey eyes, thin brows and dark, vampy lips made their appearance to the beauty stage and luckily (aside from the thin brows) have yet to make their exit! This brief history lesson brings us to today!

We are incredibly fortunate to have skincare and makeup at our disposal, in forms that we can afford and learn to use via YouTube and other technologies. We bet Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubenstien would be dancing through the streets if they could see just how far their quaint passion all those years ago has grown. Now living in an age where makeup continues to better itself, becoming safer, cleaner and greener (thank goodness we don't use arsenic anymore), we have to say that we are honored to be apart of an industry that cares about your skin, your feelings, and your confidence. Take a look at looks from the past, add a little modern flare (and personal style) to them, and go out and thank the ladies of the past for having the know-how and gumption to put their best face forward!

Fall Trends


Summer has come to a close but don’t fret. There is lots of excitement to look forward to this fall.
Fall represents many things. It means back to school, changing leaves, and colder weather. As we move from flip flops to boots, here are a few ways to enhance our fall skin care and makeup regimen.




Start using a more “clever” cleanser

Why just cleanse your skin when you can cleanse your skin with a product that has added benefits  and won’t strip the skin’s natural moisture content? PURIFY, our enzyme cleanser is this and so much more! Harvest Daytime Smokey Eye

Fall is a magical time of year when people think about transition and change.  However, the smokey eye is always in demand.  This daytime take on the classic smokey eye from Director of Education, Ami Shvartzman, will accentuate your eyes and make them pop. 












Steps for Achieving the Harvest Daytime Smokey Eye
  1. Before! Naked eyelid.
  2. Apply Eye Pencil in Brown from lash line to crease.
  3. Use Smudge Brush to blend Eye Pencil upward toward crease.
  4. Using the Oval Shadow Brush press the deepest shade from the Sugar Plum Trio on top of the blended liner.
  5. Apply Toasted Peach from the Matte Collection with the Contour Shadow Brush to crease area and blend out the deep purple shade from the Sugar Plum Trio.
  6. Using the Smudge Brush apply the same deep purple shade from the Sugar Plum Trio to the bottom lash line.
  7. Apply Defining Mascara in Black to top and bottom lash line.
  8.  Ta Da! The after.   BEAUTIFUL!

Spring Style Trends 2014

Tips from Alejandro Falcon for this year’s Spring makeup trends.

 

Keeping the skin fresh looking, without adding heavy foundations, is the way to go. Light mineral makeup can minimize flaws and add protection from the environment. Apply your mineral foundation as light as possible to make the skin look fresh and healthy. Increase hydration and give skin a natural glow with hyaluronic acid, found in Colour's Mineral Hydration Mist.

 

The colors chosen for lips and cheeks should be the same shade and should not contain any mixtures or other colors added to them. If wearing a red lipstick you would not add a pink or silver gloss to it, but rather stick with the boldness of the color. Blushes should complement your natural blush tone. If you are going to go with a bolder lip color, then add a subtle shade of blush to blend with it. The look for the blush is to accentuate the cheeks without utilizing a contouring effect when applying them.

 

Since eyes and lips have become a focus for Spring, mascaras and eyeliners play a big part in enhancing the eyes. Solid eye shadow colors applied all over the eye area and using a wet eyeliner can add a subtle yet defined look. Pick a shade that would be the opposite of your eye color so that it can bring out the color of your eyes. For instance if you have blue eyes use a shade that has brown, copper, yellow, bronze, plum or terracotta tones. For brown eyes you can use blues, purples, greens or mahoganies to enhance them. Use a good eye shadow base such as our Age Defying Concealer to cover any discoloration on the eyelids and noticeable capillaries. With an oval shadow brush, apply the shadow to the top of the lash line and sweep it back on the rest of the eye area. Try to keep the tear duct light in color and add a soft lighter shadow tone below the brow area, just as a finish.

 

Brows can be defined in their natural shapes but a square-type appearance is what's in for
Spring. Use the Brow Gel to help fill in the brows. Lashes should be enhanced and built up. Use the Defining Mascara and reapply to add volume, coating both upper and lower lashes. Wet liners, such as the Liquid Eye Definer, will further define eyes. Apply a wing tip at the end of the lash line for the perfect “Cat’s Eye", giving your eyes the appearance that they are open and almond shaped. Use a regular pencil liner for the bottom lash line and apply to the inside rim of the eyes for a more defined and dramatic effect.

 

Keeping it as simple as possible is the best natural way for this year’s Spring style.
