Niacinamide - What it's All About!

Niacinamide is an ingredient you will find in most Osmosis Skincare products due to the multitude of benefits it has for the skin. The difference in niacinamide from other common skincare ingredients is that it is a cell communicating ingredient. This means it alters the way cells perform so we are creating permanent change in the skin instead of a temporary result.

Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, offers multiple benefits for aging skin. It can improve the skin's elasticity, dramatically enhance the barrier function, help with discoloration, and help to revive skin's healthy tone and texture.

Topically applied, it can increase ceramides and free fatty acid levels in the skin to help prevent losing water content and stimulate microcirculation in the dermis which can cause a temporary flushing of the skin. Niacinamide is also known to treat uneven skin tone and acne and the red marks it leaves behind.

The terms niacin, nicinamide, and Vitamin B3 are often used interchangeable to refer to any member of this family of organic compounds, having the same biochemical activity. Niacinamide can be found in many foods including meat, fish, eggs, green vegetables, and cereal grains. When we consume these foods, we enable our bodies to produce niacinamide on its own. It is essential to the body as it increases nutrient delivery to the skin through enhancing circulation. Proven to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, niacinamide assists in the fight against free-radical damage as well as calming inflamed skin.

This ingredient is seen throughout the Osmosis Skincare Line:

       *Niacinamide Powder Active - Professional
       *Powder Blends - Professional
*Our one-of-a-kind, Facial Infusion - Professional
       *Vitamin A Serums
       *Refresh Eye Serum
       *Repair Healing Mask

To receive the benefits of liposomal delivered niacinamide, use a Vitamin A Serum once a day to start, working up to twice daily use, follow with Clear or Clear Plus+ to help drive the ingredient into the skin. And treat your skin to a hydrating chocolate mask, Repair, a couple of times a week. Your skin will thank you!

Ingredient Spotlight: Chlorella Vulgaris Extract – Super Food for your Face

Our bodies are made up of 75% water. The earth contains roughly the equivalent amount of vital, hydrating H20. Our body homeostasis clearly has a strong parallel with the homeostasis of our planet.  It would make sense then to search our vast oceans for the abundant amount of nutrients that inevitably can provide a wealth of benefits for our body and skin. Micro-algae, sourced from our earth’s seas, are a rich source of proteins, fatty acids, minerals, phyto-nutrients and anti-oxidants, providing a myriad of beneficial properties for the health of our skin. Advancements in cosmetic chemistry have allowed us to extract active constituents from a variety of species of algae, giving us powerful marine derived tools for our anti-aging needs. Chlorella Vulgaris leads the pack as a true age reversal active, from a 100% botanical source. It is a single celled, water grown green algae, with one of the highest concentrations of chlorophyll known to man. Chlorophyll is nature’s detoxifier, and as such, Chlorella is considered a potent super food. Topical use of this seaweed species has proven to act against wrinkles and protects skin from harmful environmental aggressors. This is due to its incredible ability to stimulate collagen synthesis thereby supporting tissue regeneration and wrinkle reduction.  Chlorella’s wonderful attributes have some statistically significant impacts on human skin, giving us the opportunity to take our skin care formulas further into naturally sourced yet clinically proven levels of efficacy. Benefits of topical usage include:

-       Collagen is the main protein found in the body, giving tissue it’s structure and function. Chlorella increases Collagen Type 1 expression by 333% and Collagen Type 3 expression by 150% in human fibroblasts.

-       Elastin is a glycoprotein secreted by dermal cells which gives skin it’s fluidity and elastic properties. Elafin is powerful inhibitor of the enzyme elastase, which destroys elastin. Chlorella increases Elastin expression by 35% and Elafin expression by 183% in human keratinocytes.

-       Anti-angiogenic properties. Chlorella reduces new blood vessel growth and formation, minimizing vascular imperfections such as dark under eye circles, visible capillaries and erythema associated vascular skin conditions such as rosacea.

-       Due to it’s high carotenoid content, Chlorella acts as a strong anti-oxidant and UV neutralizer, rapidly diminishing the negative side effects of excess UV radiation exposure.

-       Chlorella has natural growth factors and pre-biotic peptides that help stimulate and feed the good bacteria in our skin. Our skin’s acid mantle ecosystem and micro-biome, is designed to keep foreign invaders out. Since Chlorella supports this ecosystem, it helps maintain our skin’s native immune system.

It is very evident that Chlorella Vulgaris extract is nature’s anti-aging workhorse. Seen throughout our line, in products such as our Vitamin A serums, Replenish, Refresh PM, and our Facial Infusion. Chlorella Vulgaris will give your skin the ability to fight aging, strengthen its immune system, neutralize harmful reactive oxygen species and support the skins ability to heal. Feeding the skin nutrients is the mainstay of the Osmosis approach to skin care, and this potent super food allows us to do just that. Time to let our skin feast!

Ingredient Spotlight :: Niacinamide

When was the last time you sat down and really began to understand the function of your skin? Have you ever understood it? Did you know that your skin has it’s own metabolism? Yes, it sure does. Just like the metabolic system we know of systemically that regulates our cellular energy for proper weight distribution, our skin has a native metabolic system with an equally as fascinating and vitally important function.

Niacinamide, one of the powerhouse ingredients seen throughout our line, effectively increases the skin’s metabolism, allowing your cells to properly communicate with each other for repair, support barrier function, and regulate desquamation. That’s right, when your skin’s metabolic rate is performing at it’s most optimum level via Niacinamide application – cells naturally exfoliate, UV damage and oxidative stress is repaired, and your skin’s first line of defense, your barrier, is intact and ready to defend your largest organ. Unfortunately, like all biological systems, our skin metabolism slows down as we age – this is the reason we begin to form fine lines and wrinkles, and we tend to pack on that weight a bit easier! The metabolic rate can slow even further by extrinsic and intrinsic factors, such as sun exposure, smoking and poor, sugar rich diets. Fret not though, as Niacinamide is here to come to the rescue.

Niacinamide is the biologically active form of Vitamin B3 (Niacin), and it’s reduced form NAD, is by far one of the most important components of proper cellular function, acting as a precursor in over 300 chemical and enzymatic reactions in the skin and body. It has several proposed medicinal applications including anti-inflammation, reversal of photo immunosuppression, and an increase in cellular lipid synthesis. Topically, our patented liposomal Niacinamide will increase ceramide production for improved barrier function, repair photo aged skin, regulate unwanted pigmentation, decrease sebum production, and return your cellular turnover rate to normal. Systemically, it’s involvement in the energy cycle of your cells, known as the Krebs or Citric Acid cycle, will allow free fatty acids and glucose to be more efficiently used and burned as fuel, versus being stored as fat, all while increasing your own native energy without artificial central nervous system stimulation. A win on both ends!

Find Niacinamide topically in our Vitamin A serums, Replenish, Enlighten, Refresh, Refresh PM, Repair, Facial Infusion, and in multiple PowderBlends and Actives. Try Elevate, our natural energy supplement, for a healthy dose of this all-important vitamin.

Enjoy!
