Our Favorite Gut-Healthy Takes on Thanksgiving Classics

We love any chance to gather around a giant table of delicious food with friends and family, but can certainly go without that post-feast bloat. We have collected some of our favorite gut-healthy (yet equally as tasty) takes on Thanksgiving classics and wanted to share them with you! Before you brave the Thanksgiving week local grocery store madness, be sure to add these to your checklist.

Herb Roasted Turkey Tenderloin

Don't get us wrong, we love a buttery, roasted full-sized turkey as much as the next person. But why spend 8 hours in the kitchen basting that 16-pound bird when you can have a leaner, yet juicier (yes, we said it!), and more importantly, easier option with a turkey tenderloin. This recipe will change the turkey game in the best way.

Butternut Squash Soup

Taking one classic side and turning it to liquid form is not only much gentler on the digestive system, but paves the way for an explosion of flavor opportunity! We love this butternut squash soup recipe, but you could do the same with broccoli cheddar, sweet potatoes, or even baked potatoes.

Cauliflower Mash

Cauliflower is one of our favorite healthy substitutes because it can take on the form of just about anything. Pizza crust, chicken wings, and even mashed potatoes! Just swap your russet potatoes for this high-fiber veggie and enjoy a guilt-free version of the classic crowd-pleaser. This garlic parmesan cauliflower mash is deceptively delicious.

Cranberry-Chia Jam

It's not the holidays without cranberries! But this seasonal dish can be loaded with sugar and preservatives when it comes from a can. Harness the health benefits of fresh cranberries with this sweet and savory jam that's great as a side and even better with leftovers.

Drink & Be Merry

Yes, you can even add a wellness twist to your holiday cocktails (because, thank goodness). We tried mindbodygreen's "cinnamon cranberry orange sunrise" and gave it the stamp of Osmosis Wellness approval! This scrumptiously seasonal toddy is chock-full of anti-inflammatory agents your digestive system will thank you for.

Quick & Healthy Breakfasts for the Fast-Paced Morning

Mornings can be crazy. After attempting to wake up, get yourself ready, get your kids ready, get out the door with all books, projects, and lunch boxes, breakfast can be an after-thought to say the least. We get it, we are guilty of the "half a pop-tart on the way out the door" too. But, as cliche as it sounds, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day! It kick-starts our metabolism, prepares our digestive system, and fuels us for the day.  We have prepared a list of quick, easy, and healthy breakfasts you can prepare in a flash to get you on your feet and out the door with a little extra pep in your step!

1. Overnight oats.
Oats are an excellent source of fiber and a great breakfast option to keep you full and satisfied until lunch time. But, who has the time or patience to monitor a boiling pot in the midst of the usual morning chaos? Overnight oats are prepared the night before and steep in the refrigerator all night long so you don't have to do a thing except eat!

Here's how: Take a bowl or jar and add oats, a milk of your choice (we are loving cashew milk right now), chia, flax, sunflower, or pumpkin seeds, a drizzle of honey or maple syrup, and your favorite nut butter. Give it a stir, slap on the lid, and pop it in the fridge! In the morning you can top with your favorite fruit, or enjoy as is.

2. Smoothie Bowls.
We are all about the smoothie bowl trend! Chock-full of vitamins and antioxidants, these fruity concoctions add a fresh flare to your morning routine. We love how you can customize each bowl for a different taste every day! Plus, you can multi-task while you whip these bad boys up in the kitchen to maximize your time in the morning while still leaving the house with a full and happy belly.

Check it out: Stock up on fresh fruits at the grocery store so you have options for variety and flavor (be sure to include a banana for each day)! Separate your fruits by day, being sure to cut off all stems and peels, then toss them in a baggie and into the freezer, labeling each day for convenience. In the morning, throw your fruits for that day into the blender with a splash of milk of your choice, your favorite nut butter, and a drizzle of honey (feel free to add vitamins or proteins in their powder-form here for an extra boost of nutrients). Top with more fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, and shaved coconut, and be on your way! You can also peep these recipes for slightly more detailed options.

3. Meal-Prep Breakfast Burritos.
Who doesn't love a delicious breakfast burrito? The ultimate feel-good breakfast that seems to fuel the heart and soul. The best part about burritos is that there really are no rules. You can pretty much put anything you want in a tortilla and call it a meal. But, in effort to keep us fueled and healthy all day, we're loving tofu black bean breakfast burritos!

How to make it happen: Meal prepping is key here. Make your burritos over the weekend, wrap 'em up, and stick them in the freezer for ready-made breakfast all week long for the whole family! Cook your tofu (or buy it ready-made, we won't tell), scramble some eggs, boil the black beans, and quickly sauteé some onions (and any other veggie you like). Wrap it all up in a tortilla of your choice, roll it into some foil, and pop in the freezer! In the morning, unwrap the foil and throw it in the microwave, and voilà! A tasty and nutritious breakfast in a jiffy.

4. Get creative with toast!
This is one of our very favorite breakfasts because it gives us a chance to express originality through our food first thing in the morning! From savory to fruity to sweet, and everywhere in between, you can create toasts with enough variety and flare for weeks. Keep it simple, or go crazy with toppings! Either way, you'll boost your metabolism and be out the door in a flash.

Some of our faves: We have an undeniable sweet tooth, so we love coming up with toasts that satisfy that sugar craving, but are still healthy and filled with body-nourishing benefits. Try a slice of whole wheat bread, spread with almond butter, top with sliced bananas, drizzle with wildflower honey, and sprinkle with cinnamon. Who says you can't have dessert for breakfast when it's filled with vitamins and minerals?! Are you more of a savory-seeker? We also love 9 grain toast, spread with goat cheese, topped with heirloom tomatoes and an egg, and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Tap into your toast inspiration here.

No matter what your palate craves, there is a healthy breakfast option for you that will have you looking forward to your morning meals instead of skimping out on them! Empower your mornings for yourself and the whole family starting with breakfast. Tell us your favorite healthy breakfast go-to's in the comments below!

Seasonal Summer Fruits & Power Smoothie Recipe

With the warm weather, sunshine, and new season of life comes nature’s sweetest harvest of fruits! There are a plethora of fruits reaching their prime, ripe perfection this time of year, and they reap amazing benefits to our skin and body! What a treat! Whether you are sipping on fruit-infused sangria by the pool, enjoying a fresh fruit smoothie, or simply snacking straight out of the package, you are giving your body a burst of vitamins and antioxidants that result in a healthy gut and radiant skin. We’ve listed just a small handful of our faves this season:

1. Cherries – No, not those bright red cherries you get on the top of an ice cream sundae. We’re talking fresh, dark, pitted Bing cherries. Not only are they a perfect combination of sweet and tart deliciousness, they are chock-full of vitamins and minerals to heal and protect our bodies! It has been shown that the powerful antioxidants in these perfectly poppable treats have the ability to relieve pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, and even ward off some chronic diseases and illnesses! Cherry-o!

2. Melons – The all-stars of the summer time. Is there   anything better than snacking on watermelon or   honeydew balls at a picnic or backyard BBQ? These
light and juicy snacks contain a high percentage
of water, helping you cut down on the cals,
while getting essential vitamins for healthy
skin and organ function. Cantaloupe and honeydew
are also high in potassium to boost heart health.
So snack away!

3. Apricots – Dried or fresh, apricots are an easy and tasty on-the-go snack offering an array of nutritional needs for our skin and bodies. We love that these juicy gems pack a punch of vitamin A – an essential in the health of our skin and preventing free-radical damage. What a tasty way to keep wrinkles away! They’re also a great source of fiber which promotes digestive functionality. Tip: dried apricots are a great way to add flavor and sweetness to trail mix!

4. Strawberries – Everybody’s fave! Munching
on strawberries is great year-round, but prime
strawberry time is in the summer! It’s easy enough to
include strawberries in your diet because of their sweet,
juicy flavor, but it’s even easier when you know the
endless health benefits they can offer. These bright red
berries can boost immunity, maintain heart health
for longevity, and they even possess
cancer-fighting qualities! We’ll have another please!

 5. Tomatoes – curve ball! Yes, tomatoes really do classify as a fruit, and though they are not as sweet as the others, there are plenty of delicious ways to incorporate tomatoes into your summer diet. Garden-fresh tomatoes are rich in essential nutrients and they are thriving this time of year! Slice them up with some mozzarella, balsamic vinegar, and basil for a fresh and summery Caprese salad! Consuming tomatoes regularly will give you a significant boost of muli-vitamins, antioxidants, and can reduce your risk of various cancers!

We hear all the time that fruits are high in antioxidants, but who knew they could offer so many other incredible benefits like warding-off disease or preventing free-radical damage! We can reap these benefits just by incorporating fruit into our summer drinks and snacks! Now that’s something we can get behind!

Inflammation: The Best Foods to Fight it!

Inflammation can be a fickle beast. If your organs are inflamed then chances are your skin is as well. If your skin is inflamed, you may not be feeling too happy. Did you know what we eat and put into our bodies has a HUGE effect on our overall wellness?  Foods with high fat, sugar, and salt can heighten inflammation as can heavy diets consisting of red meat and deli meats (which are heavily processed and extremely high in sodium). In order to bring our inflammation down we need to put alkalizing food into our system. When our bodies are low in acidity and high on alkaline, inflammation is diminished. There are some really great and tasty foods to incorporate into your daily diet to help keep your wellness in check. Let's take a deeper look into the Osmosis plan for anti-inflammation eating.

1. Whole Grain: Whole grains are high in fiber and low in sugar. They also help keep your bowel movements regular which is key to keeping your intestines healthy!

2. Dark Leafy Greens: It's no secret that dark leafy greens play a vital role in your wellness and health. Vitamin E rich greens play a key role in protecting the body from inflammation-causing proteins. The chlorophyl in leafy greens also contributes to beneficial detoxing and skin health.

3. Nuts: Nuts that are rich in omega-3, antioxidants, and healthy fats are vital to reducing inflammation. Adding nuts like Almonds, Walnuts, and Pecans can reduce inflammation in as little as six weeks time.

4. Bright colored veggies and spices: Ginger, Turmeric, Onion, and Garlic are perfect foods to add into any meal to help fight inflammation and toxins. Peppers, tomatoes, and beets also contribute to wellness with their antioxidant powers and protect the body from harmful chemicals. Juicing these healthful veggies in the morning with lemon and berries is a great way to start your day!

5. Olive Oil: This oil is high in good fats and aids in keeping the body lubricated, which aids in toxin and inflammation excretion. Olive Oil is a great substitute for butter and other saturated fats used to flavor and cook food.

6. Citrus: Orange, lemon, and lime are high in heart-healthy and immune-healthy Vitamin C. These fruits are highly alkalizing which contributes to low inflammation.

**Additional supplements to help fight inflammation include Complete and Inner Harmony. These two help with proper digestion and balance of the organs' main functions. Don't forget to take Complete after every meal to aid in enzymatic functions and Inner Harmony morning and night to balance your body's internal wellness.**

These six all-stars are foods that can easily fit into your daily diet and taste delicious. One of our favorite recipes to utilize these fabulous foods is Forbidden Kale Salad. See the recipe below and get to eating!

Forbidden Kale Salad:

Serves 2

1 1/2 Cups Cooked Black Rice (aka Forbidden Rice)
4 Cups Kale (torn into bite-sized pieces)
1 Large Beet (cooked and chopped)
1/2 Chopped Onion (red or white)

Dressing:

2 Tablespoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Tablespoons Crushed Almonds
1 Clove Garlic (diced)
1 Tablespoon Fresh, Organic Almond Butter
1 Juicy Lime
Pinch of Salt and Pepper
Fresh grated Ginger and Turmeric for garnish and flavor.

Combine all oil, almond butter, garlic, lime juice, salt and pepper and whisk together until all ingredients are emulsified.

In a large bowl combine rice, beets, onion, and kale.

Drizzle dressing onto the salad and toss until everything is well-coated.

Sprinkle almonds, ginger, and turmeric on top. Serve it up and eat it! This salad makes for a great lunch or dinner. You could even add a scrambled egg to it and down it for breakfast!
