Simplifying Serums

The Osmosis Vitamin A Serums are the most powerful age reversing serums available. They allow the skin to help remodel itself through increased nutrition, immune repair and collagen and elasticity production.

Clarify

Serum Levels - Where to Start

You may have noticed with some of our Osmosis Serums  that there is a new addition to the labels. Each Vitamin A and DNA Repair serum now reflects a level listed on the bottle. But what exactly do these levels mean?  Have no fear, we are here to help you crack the code!

As always, this system was designed with the Osmosis customer in mind. Each level listed on the bottle serves as a starting place for the skin care professional recommending the product. The levels were designed by aligning the activity level of the formulation with skin tolerance (i.e. how sensitive your skin is to these ingredients).  We felt that this was particularly important when recommending our Vitamin A and DNA Repair serum families.

Our Vitamin A serums all contain the active ingredient Retinaldehyde with our phosphatidylcholine delivery system. Retinaldehyde is the safest and least irritating form of Vitamin A on the market but has the same effectiveness as Retin A. Because of this strength, it is important that our customers (and their clients) remember to introduce these serums into their daily facial regime very slowly.  We have broken these serums out into 4 different levels and a specific Blemish Vitamin A serum to make this introductory process more seamless. These levels can be broken down into the following:

 
 
Level 1 – Relieve (.025% Retinaldehyde): Relieve is our level 1 vitamin A serum, designed for sensitive skin types who desire a dramatic restoration of the skin rejuvenation process. The most gentle of our vitamin A serums, this formula addresses skin immunity to allow for healing and repair.

 
 
 
Level  2 – Calm (.05% Retinaldehyde): Calm is our level 2 vitamin A serum, designed for moderately-sensitive skin types who desire a dramatic restoration of the skin rejuvenation process. It encourages the skin to calm inflammation, restore the protective barrier, increase skin nutrients and immune repair, rebuild the thin dermis, normalize oil, hydrate and firm.

 
 
 
 
Level 3- Correct (.05% Retinaldehyde): Correct is our level 3 vitamin A serum, designed for normal skin types who desire a dramatic restoration of the skin rejuvenation process. This formula sets up the ideal environment for aging skin to remodel itself through increased skin nutrients, collagen production and elasticity.

 
 
 
 
 
 
Level 4-Renew (.1% Retinaldehyde):  Renew is our level 4 vitamin A serum, designed for resilient or conditioned skin types who desire a dramatic restoration of the skin rejuvenation process. The most potent combination of fibroblast stimulators encourages the reversal of skin aging.

 
 
 
 
Blemish – Clarify (.05% Retinaldehyde): Clarify is Osmosis blemish serum clears blemishes, normalizes oil production, shrinks pores, increases skin's immune support, hydrates, calms inflammation, protects skin from UV rays, restores the epidermal barrier, and restores dermal thickness.

 
 
 
Please note that these levels do not necessarily indicate a progression and moving to a higher level of serum is not always necessary. However, if you do choose to increase to a higher level  serum, make sure that your skin is comfortable with the serum you are using at 2 pumps a day before transitioning.


When it comes to our DNA Repair Serums the active ingredient used is Vitamin C, specifically L-Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbyl Glucoside.  These forms of Vitamin C in these particular forms are supercharged antioxidants and are wonderful at helping to build proteins, decreasing hyperpigmentation and working synergistically with our products containing vitamin E. With that said, Vitamin C and particularly L-Ascorbic Acid can be somewhat stimulating to the skin. Ascorbyl Glucoside contains one molecule of Ascorbic Acid and one of Glucose so it tends to be more mild in activity. Because of these differences we have also applied our levels to this category, these levels can be broken down into the following:

Level 1- Catalyst Plus+: Catalyst Plus + is our level 1 serum that is more appropriate for very sensitive skin. It is in an Aloe base with the active ingredient Ascorbyl Glucoside. Catalyst Plus+ contains a patented formula that activates your natural zinc finger remodeling process, which is a critical part of DNA repair. The unique combination of vitamin C, amino acids and minerals also encourages the skin to increase collagen and elastin production, promotes wound healing and improves sun protection.

 
 
Level 2- Catalyst: Catalyst is our level 2 serum that is more appropriate for normal skin. It is L-Ascorbic Acid in a water base. Catalyst contains a patented formula that activates your natural zinc finger remodeling process, which is a critical part of DNA repair. The unique combination of vitamin C, amino acids and minerals also encourages the skin to increase collagen and elastin production, promotes wound healing and improves sun protection.

 
Level 3- Catalyst AC-11:  Catalyst AC-11 is our level 3 serum which has the highest level of repair activity, appropriate for all skin types, even some sensitive skins. It has L-Ascorbic acid in an aloe base. Catalyst AC-11 contains a patented formula that activates your natural zinc finger remodeling process, which is a critical part of DNA repair. In addition, this product contains the patented technology AC-11 that is proven to increase DNA repair by 33%. The unique combination of vitamin C, amino acids and minerals also encourages the skin to increase collagen and elastin production, promotes wound healing and improves sun protection.

Exploring your Educational Opportunities and Resources with Osmosis

There are many new and exciting changes happening here at Osmosis; beautiful new packaging, a new simplified message and many new resources for you, our customer.

What’s New?


1. Updated Website- This amazing resource is an easy on-line resource for finding and identifying skin conditions and their Osmosis solutions. Simply select a skin condition on the home page. This will then pull up a guide which describes how to identify and select the specific type of skin condition. Click on this and you are routed to a page that gives a full protocol for homecare products to treat that specific skin condition, it’s so simple!







In addition to this, logging into our professional section of the website unlocks the Resource Center. The Resource Center is a portal in which our customers can access: marketing materials, relevant articles, an archive of our newsletters, the Osmosis professional and homecare protocols, and seasonal facials, order forms and handouts as well as product information (including product information sheets, MSDS and a downloadable version of our knowledge manual.

In addition to this, logging into the website will also give customers access to the Osmosis Learning Center. The Osmosis Learning Center offers two types of online workshops for the busy professional. The first avenue is Learn on Your Own which is available at any time and is a place for self-guided learning videos which incorporate all three of our brands; Skin Care, Colour and Internal Wellness. The second area for Osmosis skin care professionals that we offer through the OLC are Online Classes guided by an educator. These are offered twice per month and there are two options available, our Extended Level One Course which includes product knowledge and treating by the source as well as a basic Intro to Osmosis.



2. Social Media platforms are a key way that we at Osmosis connect with our clients. Our Facebook page is home to some of our latest announcements, articles and press mentions, tweets from our Twitter account as well as links to our YouTube videos . It is a place for our customers to ask questions and directly interact with Osmosis staff. Facebook is also where we link articles
and information from our Blog, (blog.osmosisskincare.com) which is an invaluable hub of information.  NEW - You can now find us on Instagram!

3. In case you hadn’t noticed Osmosis has gone through a transition, with our NEW look the Osmosis Marketing Materials have gotten a beautiful and dramatic facelift! With the adoption of our new message, Treating the Skin from the Source we have also launched a Protocol Brochure which simplifies and lays out the homecare regimes for Acne, Rosacea,  Hyperpigmentation and Aging including photos of how to identify each form of these skin conditions. We also have Prescription Cards which allow you to check off which Osmosis products and professional treatments are recommended for your client, and how often
to use them with a carbon copy for the esthetician to file to keep a record of previous recommendations. Our Knowledge Manual is your guide to everything Osmosis. It contains all of our product information sheets, protocols, ingredient decks, information about our philosophy and key ingredients, it has so much info that I never let that binder leave my side!

Dr Johnson's Corner :: September 2014

As much as I love Summer, it definitely results in the return of pigmentation whenever the source has not healed completely.  Hopefully many of you noticed that a lot of your old pigmentation did not return!  As Fall approaches, we need to double down on our treatment of the source of these lesions with Rescue and Catalyst.  Remember that we have to see the last bit of redness leave the face before we can expect the pigment to not return.

Defending Your Skin’s Defense System: A Healthy Barrier Function

 
 
Skin is the organ that defines our surface. It nurtures and protects us. It has the most remarkable ability to repair itself subsequent to trauma or injury. Like the genius that is, it warns us when we come into contact with foreign material that should not be present. The skin requests very little from us, other than understanding, respect and care. We can be better defenders of our body’s largest organ, if we simply understand some basics of skin’s design, structure and function. The most important function your skin has is forming a barrier between your body and the outside world. Your skin is your shield of armor. It protects you from external assault, such as bacteria, environmental toxins, UV radiation and most foreign invaders. Proper barrier function is by far the most important aspect to skin homeostasis and health, and barrier integrity should be every estheticians focus and credo. Skin is our livelihood. Learn it. Live it. Understand it.
 
Your skin is made up of many different layers, with the top layer (your Stratum Corneum), being the all-protective barrier. Continue to damage your Stratum Corneum and therefore your skin's barrier, and you get into a vicious cycle of inflammation, and complete loss of skin function. Rapid increase in water loss, exponentially decreases your skin’s operating system from functioning normally. Your skin becomes much more susceptible to further damage when we break it’s barrier down. Now herein lies the paradox: while the Stratum Corneum is made up of a layer of dead skin cells, it is furthest from being metabolically inactive. In fact, it’s ability to communicate and send messages to your lower layers of skin, make it the most viable “living” organism your body has to protect and defend us.
 
The barrier is made up of a composition of free fatty acids, cholesterol and ceramides. It is important to understand that it is these fats or lipids in our Stratum Corneum that are the active constituents in the permeability barrier. When it come to proper skin health and barrier function, fat is absolutely your friend. Lipids that are physiologically mimetic to the skin's barrier, should be the most prevalent seen in your moisturizers and barrier repair creams. Shea Butter, Jojoba, Squalane, Saturated Phosphatidylcholine, and Fatty Acids, all play a pivotal role in restoring barrier homeostasis and are seen in our Quench, Quench+, and Immerse moisturizers. Other actives like native Phosphatidylcholine, which is rich in Linoleic Acid, the most abundant fatty acid seen in our cell membrane, can help restore barrier integrity. It is also used as our novel delivery system (seen in all Vitamin A serums, Replenish, and StemFactor), allowing our actives to fuse with the lipid rich cell membrane and shuttled into the heart of the cell. Our liposomal Niacinamide (seen in the above mentioned products), also increases the skin’s ceramide production, further restoring our shield of armor. Your skin can absolutely use some help in order to carry out its protective work, luckily there are fantastic substances which can do this. The right products, with the correct composition of barrier repairing substances, are the best line of defense we have to keep the skin healthy. All skin. No matter what type, or condition it is in. Keep the integrity of the barrier intact, and you are on your way to a lifetime of beautiful and radiant skin.

According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the US affecting 7.5 million Americans. Psoriasis affects the immune system causing the cell growth cycle of the skin to speed up. This results in itchy, red, thick flaky lesions on the skin. The Scoop On Rosacea and Relief

April is National Rosacea Awareness Month so I thought I would take this opportunity to explore this very common skin condition with our readers. According to the National Rosacea Society, rosacea.org, over 16 million Americans suffer from rosacea, many without even knowing they have it.  It is most common in people age 30-50 and individuals with fair skin.  Those who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk. Even though this disorder is more frequently diagnosed in women it can be more severe in men. The most common signs of rosacea include: flushing, persistent redness, bumps, pimples, and visible capillaries. Other less prevalent signs range anywhere from burning or stinging, dry skin, plaques, skin thickening, swelling, and eye irritation.


There are 4 types of rosacea (AAD):


 

erythematotelangiectatic rosacea which is flushing, persistent redness, and visible capillaries
 
papulopustular rosacea which has persistent facial redness with bumps or acne-like breakouts

 
phymatous rosacea described as skin thickening and enlargement bumpy texture

 

ocular rosacea affecting with symptoms of watering, bloodshot appearance, irritation, itching, gritty feeling, burning or stinging

 

 
While some people only experience flushing, rosacea can result in permanent changes in appearance for example, a bulbous nose called Rhinophyma. Symptoms can have such an effect on self esteem that 41 percent of rosacea sufferers reported it had caused them to avoid public contact or cancel social engagements (National Rosacea Society).

Common treatments include antibiotics, azelaic acid, isotretinoin, lasers, dermabrasion, and in severe cases electrocautery and surgery. Osmosis has had great results in treating rosacea with a more holistic approach instead of just treating the symptom on the surface. We calm inflammation both internally and in the skin.  When we increase the skin's ability to heal using ingredients that partner with the skin instead of having potentially harmful side effects, we see redness disappear, capillaries become less visible, thickening of a thinned dermis, and all over improvement in skin tone.

Doctors are still trying to determine the etiology of rosacea but according to the American Academy of Dermatology, there are some determining factors.  These include: genetics, since rosacea tends to run in families; an over active immune system; H pylori, since it is commonly found in rosacea sufferers but not all individuals with H pylori have rosacea; the demodex mite which lives on everyone's skin but is found in larger quantities in rosacea, and a protein called cathelicidin which normally protects the skin from infection but causes the inflammation seen in rosacea.

Though the medical community does not yet know the direct cause of rosacea they are starting to recognize intestinal influences.
 
Dr. Johnson has always held the belief that our digestive issues are a direct link to rosacea.
