To DIM or not to DIM?

We're so excited to bring you this special post written by Director of Education, Jamie Palmer, to answer the question of: To DIM or not to DIM?
About two years ago I switched from oral birth control to an IUD and my skin wasn't happy. Huge cysts were popping up on my chest and back with occasional ones on my jaw line. Typical hormonal acne! Restore and Harmonized Water helped, but didn't clear it entirely. Enter DIM. Diindolymethane is an extract from cruciferous vegetables. Brussel sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage are examples in this group of vegetables. The beauty of this ingredient is that it binds with estrogenic toxins and helps us to metabolize estrogen in our bodies. Most estrogenic toxins get stored in fat as they are not water soluble. DIM binds with these toxins and eliminates them through our urine.

With exposure to a multitude of things like chlorine, plastics, and pesticides that form estrogenic toxins in our bodies, we need a little more help removing them. Both men and women are exposed to these chemicals and though we think of estrogen as only effecting women, men also have estrogen in their bodies. Men use aromatase to convert testosterone to estradiol (a form of estrogen). When there is too much estradiol and not enough testosterone, more aromatase activity can result. DIM will help metabolize some of this estrogen to help balance these levels. It will also help to reduce gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue) in men. DIM can be used by both men and women to help with environmental exposure, hormonal acne, mood stability, hair loss, and oily skin. Women can also take DIM for PMS, fibrocystic breast disease, and ovarian cysts. Some research on DIM has also shown DNA repair and anti-cancer benefits.

Common Questions about DIM

Is DIM effective for hormonal acne when the client is currently taking birth control, IUD, etc.?

Yes, DIM helps to metabolize estrogen into healthier forms (like 2-hydroxy estrogen) promoting normal levels of progesterone. This will help reduce symptoms related to PMS, like acne.

How do you know when to recommend DIM and when to recommend Skin Perfection? Are they interchangeable? Can you take both at the same time?

Skin Perfection Harmonized Water reduces purging of toxins while DIM binds toxins before they reach the skin so they are both beneficial to take for hormonal acne and can be taken together.

Is DIM effective for males with acne?

If a man is experiencing hormonal acne, blemishes along the jaw line or on the body, then yes, DIM will definitely help to regulate the hormones causing acne.

Does DIM interfere with Birth Control and if so, how?

Hormonal birth control has either estrogen, progestin, or both. These hormones are used to affect the cycle of the body preventing pregnancy. DIM does not effect this cycle, but instead helps the body to manage the estrogen so it doesn't interfere with the efficacy of hormonal birth control. DIM binds estrogenic toxins and metabolizes estrogen into a healthier form for the body.

How long should you take DIM? Can you take it, then stop taking it, and restart it?

Take DIM as long as you need to keep symptoms at bay. Once that is achieved, you can discontinue. However, if symptoms return, you should continue using the supplement. It is safe to stop and start again with no adjustments to dosage.

Ask Osmosis :: Are the brushes in your Colour collection sustainable and are any animals harmed?

We use the same manufacturer that makes top quality brushes for Laura Mercier, Trish McEvoy, Nars and many of the larger retail cosmetic companies. They are hand sewn and crimped. The handle is made out of wood and the brush ferrel is nickel. They use suppliers whose handles come from managed wood reforestation programs.

Our brush manufacturer is a big supporter of the Free Arts NYC which provides under-served children and families with a unique combination of educational arts and mentoring programs. Our brush manufacturer is also environmentally sensitive and supports the fight against animal testing by supporting organizations such as Friends of the Asian Elephant who are dedicated to promoting the conservation, providing treatments, rehabilitation, and rescue for sick, injured and maltreated elephants. They are also working with Glenice Moore, an internationally known artist and author. Her instructional painting books are helping to raise money for the Dian Fossey Mountain Gorilla Fund.

Most of our brushes use goat or pony hair or a combination of both. Usually the mane or tail is shaved from the animals to acquire the hair quality. The animals are maintained with good nutritional diets to get better hair quality from them and no animal is ever killed for it. It would be an expensive process to acquire new animals all the time interfering with the sustainability of our brushes.

We also use some squirrel hair with the same integrity for the squirrels. The only synthetic brush in our line is the Eyeliner/Brow brush.

Ask Osmosis :: What are the Osmosis Colour Make Up Brushes made of?

Alejandro Falcon
Our Angled Blush and Oval Shadow brushes consist of Pony hair. They are little firmer to allow more even and smooth application of richly pigmented powder formulas.

The Contour Shadow brush is a combination of Squirrel and Pony hair. The squirrel hair quality adds softness to the brush especially when used on the delicate eye crease area.

The Eye liner/Brow brush is a Synthetic Bronze nylon. This makes them resistant to cream or waxes and less prone to damage from makeup solvents.

The Foundation Base Powder, Dome Powder and Kabuki brushes consist of Synthetic Capra (Goat) hair. They are better suited for soft layering of mineral powder foundation colors and are easier to keep clean than natural hair bristles because the filaments don't trap or absorb pigment.

The Retractable brush consists of Badger hair bristles. Badger hair is usually coarser at the top and thinner at the bottom. This is why our Retractable brush can pick up and hold powder better to take with you, for touch ups, wherever you go.

Ask Osmosis :: Why do you recommend we only use Enlighten for 90 days?

Great question!  Enlighten has both tyrosinase inhibitors and melanocyte hormone blockers that suppress the production of melanin. Melanin, of course, also provides protection for our skin and DNA so we don’t want to over suppress its production. That is where the 90 days comes in. It might not be exactly 90 days that someone can use Enlighten as everyone is slightly different and may be able to use it less or more. The idea is to use until desired effects (meaning normal skin tone) is achieved. Then stop use of the product so as to not under suppress the production of melanin. They can always pick up use again if needed down the road.

This is an example of treating the symptom and not the cause of over pigmentation. We know how great Enlighten is at getting results but if the damage still remains then the pigmentation will return. This is why we also recommend the use of Catalyst and Restore because they repair the damage so that the pigmentation doesn’t return. This takes some time but over the course of 3 months using all three products (Enlighten off and on after 90 days) they should see significant results in their pigmentation if it is not melasma or a liver spot.

Dr Johnson's recommendation: Make sure to apply Catalyst first, then wait 5 minutes and spot treat with Restore. Enlighten goes on last, a minute or two after Restore. If this is too many products, we recommend the use Catalyst and Restore only.

Ask Osmosis :: Harmonized Water Dose, Accutane, & Galvanic

You Asked.  We Answer.

Q:  Do the dosing instructions for Harmonized Water change for people over 200 pounds or under 75 pounds?

A:  In general, a person over 200 pounds should be given 2.5 mls per dose, whereas someone under 75 pounds should take 1.5 mls.

Q:  How long does someone need to be off Accutane before switching to Osmosis products?

A:  Accutane will stay in the system for 1-3 years ... sadly.  That means that inflammatory procedures should be avoided.  However, Osmosis does not cause inflammation and should be well tolerated at any stage of Accutane use.

Q:  Which Osmosis products can be used with galvanic?

A:  All Osmosis Skincare products can be used with galvanic current or high frequency except Immerse which is oil based.

Ask Osmosis :: Do Your Bottles Contain Bisphenol-A?

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a controversial chemical that is used to enhance the durability of some plastic products.  BPA is sometimes found in polycaronate plastics with the identification code of 3 or 7.  The use of BPA has recently been the subject of much discussion and research as some studies indicate it may be associated with negative health effects.

While experts have been unable to come to agreement on "safe" levels for consumer products, The European Union, Canada and the United States have banned BPA use in baby bottles.  At Osmosis, we have chosen not to use BPA.  Most of our bottles are made from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Resin which is plastic code #1 and is BPA free.  A small number of our bottles are made from plastic code #6, also BPA free.

Stem Cell & Growth Factor FAQ

What types of stem cells do you use in StemFactor?

Are these donors screened?

We use an FDA approved facility that screens all donors to ensure that our donors are healthy.

Are all human stem cells equal?

No. The health of the stem cells selected/used determines how well they produce growth factors and there are always significant differences in their size and health.  Osmosis selects the most healthy stem cells from the group and then makes another separates ut the bad ones one more time after they have been growing for a while.

Are human Growth Factors identical or do they vary with the individual?
Growth Factors are identical. The number and activity level of someone's growth factors may vary from individual to individual.

Does Osmosis use a selection process in choosing "the best" human stem cells for your Growth Factor?
Yes, we select the best of the best for Osmosis. We continue to isolate on the most healthy and active growth factors throughout the growing process.

Once Growth Factors are applied to the skin how long do they last?

The growth factors that make it into the skin can last months to years from what I understand. The ones that are stuck outside the skin deteriorate within 24 hours in most cases.

Are stem cells are they comprised of many cells or are they a single cell?
Stem cells are single cells with all of the components of a normal cell including DNA, RNA, mitochondria, etc. Their ability to transform their properties to mimic certain cells is what is unique about them.

Are Growth Factors comprised of cells?
No, growth factors are chains of amino acids, also known as proteins. They are manufactured by the stem cells and fibroblasts. The growth factors activate receptors in the skin that start wound healing and other activities in the skin. They can also trigger the recruitment of other cells and cytokines.
