Feed Your Skin: Foods that Heal Inside and Out

Proper skin care is not just about what products you put on your face, but also what you are putting in your body. Supplements and elixirs play a powerful role, but there's just nothing quite like the vitamins in fresh, raw fruits and vegetables. Plus, gut health and clear skin are directly correlated, so fueling your body with foods that empower your digestion will result in clear skin and a brilliant radiance. We're providing the ultimate guide to feeding your skin through your diet and which foods to reach for to achieve a healthy glow.

1. Healthy Fats

Foods that are rich in essential fatty acids such as avocados, olive oil, salmon, and nuts and seeds, work to maintain the skin's moisture content, keeping the barrier healthy and strong while also promoting natural elasticity (AKA, less wrinkles). These fatty acids are also, many times, anti-inflammatory to help slow the appearance of aging and reduce redness and irritation of the skin.
Topically: You can find these healthy fats in our new Moisturizing Collection to help boost results!

2. Antioxidants

There are many different types of antioxidants and they can be found in a variety of foods, particularly fruits and veggies! Antioxidants are commonly known for empowering the skin, as they limit free-radical production to keep it looking younger for longer! Antioxidant-rich foods include berries, dark chocolate, leafy greens, citrus, and more!
Topically: Our potent antioxidant concentrate, Replenish, delivers optimal doses of antioxidants directly into the skin every day!

3. Vitamin C

Aka - Vitamin 'Collagen', this power-packed ingredient has been proven to boost collagen production for supple skin, as well as aid in healing hyperpigmentation. Get your daily dose with fruits and veggies that flaunt vibrant colors like kiwi, bell peppers, citrus, and broccoli! Try this rainbow salad for the ultimate dose of vitamin C.
Topically: Our Catalyst Serums contain vitamin C combined with advanced technology to even skin tone, heal wounds, and increase DNA Repair by 33%.

4. Gut-Healing Probiotics

Foods that undergo the fermentation process can offer healing and restoration to the gut and digestive tract because of the amount of bioavailable nutrients they posses. Imbalances of the digestive system can cause skin conditions like acne, rosacea, and eczema, so instead of approaching the concern with harsh chemicals and scrubs, start within by restoring the gut's microbiome levels and increasing absorption of minerals and nutrients. We love kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and yogurt!

5. Enzymes

Your body produces enzymes that help your digestive system break down the food you eat, absorb the nutrients, and remove the rest from the body. Certain raw foods contain powerful enzymes that assist your body in this process, increasing nutrient absorption and digestion efficacy, while preventing skin conditions caused by digestive distress. Implement foods like microgreens, papaya, pineapple, and figs into your diet to optimize gut function, in-turn promoting clearer, healthier skin!
Topically: Utilize the power of bromelain (the enzyme derived from pineapple) on your skin with Purify to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells and debris!
PRO TIP: Does your digestion need a little extra back up? Try Complete Digestive Enzyme to assist with breaking down food, taking a little load off of your system!

Help your skin help you by fueling your body with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that will promote a healthy gut on the inside, and a smooth, radiant, glow on the outside! For more information on the gut-skin connection, check out our Face Mapping Guide!

Spring: Seasonal Veggies and your go-to Detox Salad!

Ahhhh Spring! We love your blooms, smells, and warmth. We also love your bounty from our favorite organic farms! Spring and summer bring about some of our favorite fruits and veggies and we can't wait to share with you one of our favorite salads that not only tastes great, but puts your body into spring cleaning-detox mode. April through May brings about some delicious finds in your produce department, here are some of our favorites:

Mangos: These tropical gems are packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Alkalizing goodness. These make for a great addition to any spring salad or snack!

Brussels Sprouts: These fiber packed goodies are also high in Folic Acid and Vitamin C. They are from the cruciferous family, making them a smart choice for potassium, protein and iron and of course, our favorite DIM.

Mushrooms: These fungi are actually good year-round! Mushrooms pack so many wonderful health benefits that we throw them into any and every meal. These calcium packed veggies help lower cholesterol, increase iron levels, and help with nutrient absorption. They also house 5% of your daily intake of Vitamin D, 6% of your protein, and 4% of your dietary fiber. Nom, nom.

Spring Peas: These bright and refreshing veggies are high in Vitamin K, A, and C and provide you with a strong serving of Folic Acid and Zinc. Spring peas make for a great snack or salad topper.

Asparagus: Is there anything better than fresh, green asparagus? They are finally in season and we love detoxing with these stems of goodness. High in Vitamin B-6, these spears make for a great natural detox remedy. Not only do you absorb all the great nutrition from asparagus, but they are also a natural diuretic, which in turn flushes excess salt and fluid from the body.  Asparagus has also been linked to heightening your mood. If you are feeling blue, munch on some blanched spears and get all the mood boosting benefits of Folic Acid and Vitamin B12!

Now that we know which veggies are in season and ready to rock, let's get to making our favorite detox salad!

Spring Detox Salad:
Serves 1

1 cup Spinach
1 cup of shredded Brussels
1/2 cup Diced Mango
6-8 spears blanched asparagus (then cut into thirds)
1/4 cup Spring Peas cut into thirds
1/3 cup diced Mushrooms
1 tablespoon Sunflower Seeds
1/2 tablespoon Chia Seeds

Top your salad with this Basil Vinaigrette (trust us, you'll want to drink this baby straight)!

Enjoy!

Inflammation: The Best Foods to Fight it!

Inflammation can be a fickle beast. If your organs are inflamed then chances are your skin is as well. If your skin is inflamed, you may not be feeling too happy. Did you know what we eat and put into our bodies has a HUGE effect on our overall wellness?  Foods with high fat, sugar, and salt can heighten inflammation as can heavy diets consisting of red meat and deli meats (which are heavily processed and extremely high in sodium). In order to bring our inflammation down we need to put alkalizing food into our system. When our bodies are low in acidity and high on alkaline, inflammation is diminished. There are some really great and tasty foods to incorporate into your daily diet to help keep your wellness in check. Let's take a deeper look into the Osmosis plan for anti-inflammation eating.

1. Whole Grain: Whole grains are high in fiber and low in sugar. They also help keep your bowel movements regular which is key to keeping your intestines healthy!

2. Dark Leafy Greens: It's no secret that dark leafy greens play a vital role in your wellness and health. Vitamin E rich greens play a key role in protecting the body from inflammation-causing proteins. The chlorophyl in leafy greens also contributes to beneficial detoxing and skin health.

3. Nuts: Nuts that are rich in omega-3, antioxidants, and healthy fats are vital to reducing inflammation. Adding nuts like Almonds, Walnuts, and Pecans can reduce inflammation in as little as six weeks time.

4. Bright colored veggies and spices: Ginger, Turmeric, Onion, and Garlic are perfect foods to add into any meal to help fight inflammation and toxins. Peppers, tomatoes, and beets also contribute to wellness with their antioxidant powers and protect the body from harmful chemicals. Juicing these healthful veggies in the morning with lemon and berries is a great way to start your day!

5. Olive Oil: This oil is high in good fats and aids in keeping the body lubricated, which aids in toxin and inflammation excretion. Olive Oil is a great substitute for butter and other saturated fats used to flavor and cook food.

6. Citrus: Orange, lemon, and lime are high in heart-healthy and immune-healthy Vitamin C. These fruits are highly alkalizing which contributes to low inflammation.

**Additional supplements to help fight inflammation include Complete and Inner Harmony. These two help with proper digestion and balance of the organs' main functions. Don't forget to take Complete after every meal to aid in enzymatic functions and Inner Harmony morning and night to balance your body's internal wellness.**

These six all-stars are foods that can easily fit into your daily diet and taste delicious. One of our favorite recipes to utilize these fabulous foods is Forbidden Kale Salad. See the recipe below and get to eating!

Forbidden Kale Salad:

Serves 2
