Vitamin C – The evolution of this anti-oxidant powerhouse.




For most of us in the skin care industry, we know instinctively that one of the most important tools we can use to induce the “anti-aging” effect is topical Vitamin C. We have over 40 years of research and clinical validation to support the effect that L-Ascorbic Acid has on cutaneous tissue. Chronic extrinsic insults, exposure to ultra violet radiation and environmental toxins can exponentially increase the aging of the skin by destroying key proteins and increasing oxidative stress in the skin.  These factors can lead to histological changes in the skin at the cellular level, in turn manifesting as poor laxity/tone, increased roughness, dullness, unwanted pigmentation, telangiectasia and classic rhytid formation. Repairing, preventing and even reversing this damage requires flooding the skin with a cascade of nutrients that are selectively taken up by the cells, allowing them to effectively neutralize the physiological processes that lead to tissue abnormalities.  Vitamin C is by far one of the most beneficial and necessary actives to achieve this response, because it is one of the chief catalysts required for the formation of structural protein such as collagen. In addition, as a reactive oxygen species scavenger, it directly targets the heart of the cell, our mitochondria, putting a stop to unwanted electron transfer and free radical formation before it can damage our vital DNA strands. This is where it excels in remodeling photo-aged skin. Since humans lack the enzyme to create native Vitamin C, we must obtain it through diet. Due to poor absorption through the GI tract, the only way to reach desired efficacious levels in skin is through topical administration. And due to the fact that the level of Vitamin C in our skin drops 425% by the time we reach middle age, topical application becomes paramount to achieve the therapeutic physiological changes we desire. The problem we face in our industry is old, antiquated Vitamin C technology. Not much has been done to take the gold-standard, and bring it into the 21st century.

 That has all changed since the launch of our Catalyst family of products. A patented cocktail of L-Ascorbic Acid, amino acids such as L-Lysine, L-Proline and Glycine (the 3 major amino acids required for collagen formation), Zinc and Copper, collectively create a powerful tool for skin repair known as Zinc Finger Technology (ZFT). Zinc Fingers, essential constituents of proteins utilized by cells to turn genes on and off, afford us the ability to target and edit genetic text and repair damaged cellular DNA. Acting as a cellular “word processing” system, these Zinc Fingers attach to specific damaged sequences of DNA, cutting out these sections, quickly allowing the DNA to repair the broken strand. This widely used medical technology has never been applied to skin care, until Osmosis formulated the Catalyst collection, taking the standard Vitamin C serum to a new stratosphere. In fact, a feat unto itself, we have finally received a grant on our patent that now allows us to “prevent skin cancer and treat skin lesions.” This has never been achieved in the cosmeceutical space, and we are proud to say we have the technology to rival every single competitor out there. Defending Your Skin’s Defense System: A Healthy Barrier Function

 
 
Skin is the organ that defines our surface. It nurtures and protects us. It has the most remarkable ability to repair itself subsequent to trauma or injury. Like the genius that is, it warns us when we come into contact with foreign material that should not be present. The skin requests very little from us, other than understanding, respect and care. We can be better defenders of our body’s largest organ, if we simply understand some basics of skin’s design, structure and function. The most important function your skin has is forming a barrier between your body and the outside world. Your skin is your shield of armor. It protects you from external assault, such as bacteria, environmental toxins, UV radiation and most foreign invaders. Proper barrier function is by far the most important aspect to skin homeostasis and health, and barrier integrity should be every estheticians focus and credo. Skin is our livelihood. Learn it. Live it. Understand it.
 
Your skin is made up of many different layers, with the top layer (your Stratum Corneum), being the all-protective barrier. Continue to damage your Stratum Corneum and therefore your skin's barrier, and you get into a vicious cycle of inflammation, and complete loss of skin function. Rapid increase in water loss, exponentially decreases your skin’s operating system from functioning normally. Your skin becomes much more susceptible to further damage when we break it’s barrier down. Now herein lies the paradox: while the Stratum Corneum is made up of a layer of dead skin cells, it is furthest from being metabolically inactive. In fact, it’s ability to communicate and send messages to your lower layers of skin, make it the most viable “living” organism your body has to protect and defend us.
 
The barrier is made up of a composition of free fatty acids, cholesterol and ceramides. It is important to understand that it is these fats or lipids in our Stratum Corneum that are the active constituents in the permeability barrier. When it come to proper skin health and barrier function, fat is absolutely your friend. Lipids that are physiologically mimetic to the skin's barrier, should be the most prevalent seen in your moisturizers and barrier repair creams. Shea Butter, Jojoba, Squalane, Saturated Phosphatidylcholine, and Fatty Acids, all play a pivotal role in restoring barrier homeostasis and are seen in our Quench, Quench+, and Immerse moisturizers. Other actives like native Phosphatidylcholine, which is rich in Linoleic Acid, the most abundant fatty acid seen in our cell membrane, can help restore barrier integrity. It is also used as our novel delivery system (seen in all Vitamin A serums, Replenish, and StemFactor), allowing our actives to fuse with the lipid rich cell membrane and shuttled into the heart of the cell. Our liposomal Niacinamide (seen in the above mentioned products), also increases the skin’s ceramide production, further restoring our shield of armor. Your skin can absolutely use some help in order to carry out its protective work, luckily there are fantastic substances which can do this. The right products, with the correct composition of barrier repairing substances, are the best line of defense we have to keep the skin healthy. All skin. No matter what type, or condition it is in. Wrinkle Protection - Tips from Osmosis to keep the wrinkles away!

1. OVER EXFOLIATION
Did you know that scrubbing away at your skin can cause aging? By over exfoliating you’re actually removing the only protective barrier that your skin has. If you remove the barrier then your skin is exposed to environmental toxins and the sun, which causes the most damage. Any inflammation and harm done to your skin will accentuate aging causing a loss of hydration, elasticity and wrinkles. So the key is to use products that encourage a natural cell turn over and make sure to keep hydrated! Our Vitamin A serums are perfect for this!
